The State of Israel was founded in 1948, after the horrors of war, persecution, and genocide. Once the state is established, citizens must be formed—and citizens are shaped and brought together through shared laws and a common culture.
The Israel Museum was therefore founded in 1965. On May 11, 2015, it celebrated its 50th anniversary—fifty years that have transformed the country and established the Israel Museum as the nation’s leading cultural institution.
All of Israel’s most prominent political leaders have passed through the Museum, beginning with David Ben-Gurion and up to the current head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu. Great figures from around the world have visited the Museum as well, most recently the American President Barack Obama.
Treasures donated from across the globe, the reconstruction and relocation of synagogues from many countries, precious testimonies of Jewish ritual objects, the Qumran writings preserved in the Shrine of the Book, as well as works by Rembrandt, Picasso, Modigliani, and masters of contemporary art, form the setting—together with tens of thousands of other artifacts and testimonies.
